Navigating the Techscape with Kara Swisher and Eric Newcomer

Journalists Kara Swisher, a graduate of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, and Eric Newcomer, founder of the startup and venture capital outlet Newcomer, joined a panel at Georgetown’s 2025 Venture in the Capital Conference. Drew Peterson (MSB’25) and Devon Pasieka (MSB’25) moderated.

The two discussed the growing influence of Silicon Valley figures in Washington, the debate over regulation of AI and crypto, and questions about oversight and accountability for powerful technology leaders. Swisher said media today must be useful, insightful and entertaining to hold an audience, and described building businesses where the partners share in the results. Newcomer noted that investors are again backing emerging venture managers with a strong thesis and portfolio companies with real traction. Their advice to aspiring journalists was to tell the truth, work hard, avoid access journalism and take risks.
